Northern Kentucky's Doersching Wins

Northern Kentucky's Doersching Wins

OMAHA, Neb. (June 29, 2019) – Northern Kentucky’s Griffin Doersching electrified a crowd of 16,647 and an ESPN2 national television audience on his way to winning the 2019 Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans College Home Run Derby title at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha on Saturday night.

Doersching outlasted Ole Miss’ Tyler Keenan, 20-15 to claim the 10th annual derby title. Together, the two sluggers combined for 91 home runs during the competition.

From the outset, Doersching was the power hitter to beat. Despite a steady wind blowing in all night, he hit 31 home runs during the first two rounds, outslugging Keenan and Duke’s Michael Rothenberg, who tied for second with 25. Keenan advanced to the final after hitting more home runs in Round 2. With Norse assistant coach Dizzy Peyton serving as his pitcher, Doersching hit several balls onto the roof of the concourse concession stands throughout the evening. Leading off in the final, Doersching once again set the tone, his 20 home runs proving to be too much for Keenan to match.

Doersching has belted 26 home runs in his first two seasons with Northern Kentucky, a mark which already places him fifth on the program’s all-time list. This year, he finished with 13 home runs, which ranked third in the Horizon League, and drove in 44 runs, both of which were team highs. A native of Greendale, Wis., Doersching ranked first for the Norse in slugging percentage (.503) and second in walks (27), doubles (13) and total bases (96).

Also this evening, the Omaha College Baseball Hall of Fame inducted its newest members. Former Arizona State standout pitcher Eddie Bane and former Texas closer Huston Street were recognized in front of the Omaha fans during the event. More information on Bane and Street can be found here.
